Ian Castro (he/they) is a master’s student in the Information Management and Systems program at the UC Berkeley School of Information, with a focus in applied data science for public policy and journalism. As an East Bay Area native, he is interested in using data to communicate the effect of gentrification and displacement on low-income BIPOC families in urban communities. Before joining the I School and UDP, Ian graduated from UC Berkeley with a BA in Media Studies and a BS in Microbial Biology. Previously, he interned at PolicyLink on their National Equity Atlas project and worked at the UCB Division of Computing, Data Science, and Society to design and teach accessible introductory data science curricula.
The project aims to understand the nature of gentrification, and displacement, and exclusion in American cities. It focuses on creating tools to help communities identify the pressures surrounding them and take more effective action.
