Jen Hu is a current undergraduate senior at UC Berkeley studying Data Science with a double emphasis in business/industrial analytics and social policy/law. She has been working with Professor Karen Chapple since June 2020, working on multiple projects such as the ADU analysis project with the state and the financial impact of COVID-19 with Berkeley’s Office of Economic Development. Currently, she is working on a project using historical big data from Twitter to evaluate the correlation of tweets with displacement and gentrification in six regions around the world. Outside of this work, Jen works with nonprofits such as Girls Who Code to increase diversity and inclusion in STEM as well as serving on the executive board of Blockchain at Berkeley, a student organization that strives to use blockchain as a technical solution for social good. This summer, Jen was also a Business Intelligence Summer Analyst at BlackRock, where she enjoyed using data science to build tools to promote financial literacy.
The project aims to understand the nature of gentrification, and displacement, and exclusion in American cities. It focuses on creating tools to help communities identify the pressures surrounding them and take more effective action.
